| Eric Borneman & Kim Lowe - Salt Mix Study |
Previous--Index--Next
This was a very useful and comprehensive study done on 9 salt mixes. The tanks were as identical as possible as far as equipment, livestock and care.
Even the fish all came from the same brood. Each tank contained fish, macro, coral, liverock and sand. A tank with natural seawater was the control tank. The salts tested were TropicMarin, Instant Ocean, Coralife, Oceanic, Reef Crystals, Red Sea, HW Marinemix and Kent.
The images show the assumptions that were made as well as the hypothesis as to what to expect, to a degree. At the end of the pictures, you will see the tanks identified as to their salt and the good and bad points of each. Further analysis will be done and published.
A couple of brands outperformed the natural seawater. What was surprising was that even though all tanks had issues now and then, the Instant Ocean tank ALWAYS had cyano that never cleared. Reef Crystals grew tons of coralline, for some reason the tank with CrystalSea had a very prolonged cycle.
As far as mixing, you will see some interesting comments regarding that as well as the calcium content of the brands.
I look forward to seeing the complete results of these studies published.
