Anthony Calfo- A Call to Farms

Previous--Index--Next

Anthony Calfo did a wonderful job covering the aspects of coral farming in a general overview that could have kept me interested for several hours instead of the one hour alotted timeframe.

He started with the topic of "Why should I do this?". He answered the question with an impassioned statement of the fact that for EVERY coral you sell or give away is one less that an individual will be buying that has been pulled off a reef! Thinking that through, if everyone did this, just think of the impact it could have on reef conservation.

He then went on to talk about setting goals as far as what it is that you want to accomplish..how big is your dream? Just enough income to cover your hobby expenses or do you want to make some serious money. The answer to that will determine the best way to continue.

We then learned how to identify the "cycle of harvest" for individual corals, in other words, how often can we chop it up and how fast until it is ready to sell. He spoke of the fastest growers and the real money makers and the importance of them vs the super pretty, slow growing species. During this part of the talk, the importance of feeding, weekly water changes and ozonizers were also covered.

Anthony then touched on the profitablility factor...or how you would make much more money by accepting less per coral but selling in bulk to wholesalers instead of marketing to the individual hobbiest.

I have to say that this was a very fast-paced and thoroughly enjoyable lecture. Probably my favorite of this year's MACNA.
