I thought just the bottoms of tanks were usually tempered. I thought you were pretty safe drilling the sides

yea from what ive read 55 gal is like the cut, anything 55 gal and below is tempered/thin glass and is tough to drill, anything above that is usually thicker glass on the sides and just tempered on the bottom

i probably could, i gave the tank away yesterday to someone that has the time and space to do it...i however have neither...

That is unfortunate. Tempered glass isn't utilized in many of the basic tanks, especially on sides, for most modern tanks. Curved glass and larger tank bottoms for the most part utilize tempered glass. In older tanks it was more common to find tempered glass mixed with regular, they would just use whatever was available, from what I have been told.

I have been holding off drilling my 40 breeder I piced up during the PETCO 1$ a gallon sale, but will bite the bullet. Few links some might find useful if they are going to drill.

man if i were you id take it to a glass shop to make sure its not tempered, since its new i wouldnt think it wuold be but after this i wouldnt take another chance...good luck on it btw
